What Are The Benefits of Crystal Cat Litter?

Now that you know all about the best crystal litters out there it’s time to zoom out a bit.

You may be adding yourself: “Why would I change to crystal litter after always using clay- based litter?” As I said in the intro, there are benefits and drawbacks to both types. Let’s review what specifically makes crystal litter stand out from the rest.

Absorbent & Long Lasting

Standard clay litter has to be changed every few days in order to keep the unwanted odors at bay. Crystal litter, on the other hand, is extremely absorbent and can last you anywhere from 3-4 weeks without changing it out.

This type of litter is much more useful for cat parents who aren’t around as much and/ or want to avoid the constant litter box cleaning. It’s also much more efficient that traditional litter, meaning one bag can last you a few months depending on the size.

Clean

Silica gel is pretty much the standard for crystal cat litter- and for good reason. Not only is it more absorbent than clay, it doesn’t stick to your cat’s coat and paws as easily. That means less time spent vacuuming and more litter in the box where it’s supposed to be.

Another advantage of silica gel is that it’s about as close to dust- free as you can get. Unfortunately, regardless of type of litter or brand, there will always at least be a bit of dust. However, if you or your cat has any sort of respiratory issues, than the silica- based crystals are you’re best option.

Lightweight

You may prefer crystal litter if you’re unwilling or unable to lug around big, heavy objects. Since crystal is more effective you don’t need to use as much as traditional litter. Less litter means smaller bags means lighter loads!

Easy Maintenance

Doesn’t dumping your litter box every few days kind of seems like a waste? Well, it is. The superior absorption abilities of the silica gel crystals make it so you don’t have to dump it more than once a month.

Remove the solids every day as usual and make sure to give the litter a good stir after you do. Stirring daily is important to avoid areas of over- saturation and the odors that follow.

Usually Hypoallergenic

Crystal litter was designed to be as tolerable as possible for cats of all shapes and sizes. Being made without potentially irritating plant proteins is a huge step in that direction. Moreover, cats with asthma will find the nearly dust- free formula a lot more agreeable than traditional litters.

Potential Drawbacks

As you may have noticed, silica litter has many advantages over traditional clay litter. However, there are some factors that may be cause for concern for you or your cat. I’ve listed some potential drawbacks below that may or may not be a deal breaker.

A little on the pricey side.

The price of crystal cat litter can be a bit deceiving. While you might be paying an extra $2 per pound or more, you’re getting a lot more out of it. Not only is it better at controlling odor, it will last you a heck of a lot longer than its clay counterpart.

That being said, some brands are not exactly budget friendly. Choose a price point that works for you and go from there.

Not very comfortable.

If your cat finds it uncomfortable to use the litter box then she naturally won’t want use it. Unfortunately, this is another potential drawback for crystal litter.

Litter crystals are harder and less forgiving than other types of litter products. Some cats mind it more than others and some cats hardly notice the difference. It’s worth a shot to see how your cat reacts to the fancy new litter.

This also largely depends on the brand. Some formulas are softer than others so test a few out and see what works best.

Not for declawed cats.

Usually only older cats will be less eager to walk on litter crystals. That’s because as they age their paws get more sensitive.

Well, the same is true for declawed cats. Their paws are very susceptible to objects around them that cause pain, so it might be a good idea to stick with clay for your declawed feline.

Not recommended for multiple cats.

While veterinarians will tell you to get a litter box for each of your cats, most cat owners know that only one is usually used.

Two or more cats add a lot of strain to the litter and makes pooling urine much more likely. Silica crystals can only absorb a little moisture at a time which is why you have to mix it up daily more maximum effectiveness. Once they reach their limit the pooling starts- usually in less than a week.

Is it toxic?

Much like Walter White’s infamous blue meth, crystal cat litter generally has an icy blue color.

In the past, some manufacturers used a substance called cobalt chloride to achieve this distinct color. In 2016, cobalt chloride was listed by the National Institute of Health as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” Not great.

Luckily, due to regulations requiring the destruction of this harmful material, you don’t need to worry about it being in your kitty litter. I’ve seen some misinformation about it out there but don’t believe everything you read. I’ve regularly checked the ingredients list on all of my purchases and haven’t come across it once.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I transition my cat from clay to crystal litter?

So you’ve weighed the pros and cons of clay and crystal litter and want to switch to crystal. Great! But how do you get your cat on board?

We all know cats are creatures of habit. They do what they want when they want and generally dislike change; even if the change will benefit them. As always, you’ll have to work with that. Treat the transition the same as you would if you were trying to get your cat to eat more dry food. Instead of taking all of the familiar wet kitten food away at once, you would add a little kibble here and little kibble there while slowly increasing the amount every day.

Same thing with litter. Add a few crystal granules to the clay each day and let her get a feel for the texture. Once she’s gotten accustomed to that, add another litter box full of just the crystals next to her old litter box. This will indicate that it serves the same purpose.

If your cat is still making it difficult then just stop cleaning the old litter box. I know this is a bit weird and gross but cats prefer cleanliness. If you can stand the smell for a few days, this tactic will definitely encourage your fluffy feline to use the new litter.

Eventually the old litter box will be forgotten for the fresh new box full of icy crystals. It may take a few days or weeks to complete the transition but you will be happy you did!

What is crystal cat litter made of?

Put simply, crystal cat litter is made of highly absorbent silica gel crystals. It’s much more effective than clay- based litter since the potent crystals are capable of absorbing up to 40% of their weight in liquid.

Do cats like crystal litter more than traditional litter?

As with humans, cats vary a lot on an individual basis. What one cat loves the other one might hate. This holds up in the case of crystal litter.

If you’ve made the plunge and bought some and your cat is shunning the litter box, you don’t have to worry just yet. Follow the steps in the first question to guide you through the transition.

Alternatively, if you bought scented litter then try switching to unscented. A lot of cats get turned off from artificial fragrances and this can be a quick fix.

How often do I change crystal cat litter?

One of the best things about crystal litter is the low maintenance. With clay litter it’s recommended you dump and change the litter every few days or a week. With crystal you can use the same litter for a whole month!

But that doesn’t mean you don’t have a little bit of daily work to do. To make your litter last long as possible, scoop the feces and give the litter box a shake or a few stirs. It’s also recommended you remove specific crystals that are extra smelly.

For further instructions I would recommend reading the manufacturer’s guidelines.
