The Litter-Robot 3 Connect is a top of the line self-cleaning litter box. Boasting the highest ratings and glowing reviews, this WiFi-enabled contraption will make the life of any cat parent a lot easier.
Regardless of how long you’ve been cat parent, you never exactly warm up to the smell of dirty litter. Sure, you tolerate it because you love your little bundle of fur, but nobody wants to wear it as a perfume. Even clean litter smells pretty gross. For most cat parents, scooping and replacing kitty litter is just another household chore that needs doing. The Litter-Robot aims to completely eliminate scooping and reduce those undesirable odors so much that you’ll forget they’re there.
It sounds too good to be true, I know. That’s why I decided to write a comprehensive review of this clever little machine to determine just how convenient it really is.
Google Customer Reviews
Let me just start by saying- using this thing make you feel like you’re in Star Trek. Yes, it detects when your kitty has done their business so it can begin the automatic sifting process. And sure, you can adjust the cycle timer and customize the sleep mode so you save on energy costs. But other self-cleaning litter boxes can do those things too. What sets the Litter-Robot 3 Connect apart from the pack?
My favorite feature- the app. That’s right- the Connect app is part of the deal and brings the level of convenience up to an entirely different level.
Get notifications, view the waste drawer level, troubleshoot any problems, see usage history for insights into your cat’s health- this app does it all. The auto litter box + the Connect app is the closest you’ll ever get to being completely hands-off when it’s time to clean the litter box. You don’t need to worry about comparability either. Both iPhone and Android users can take advantage of the unrivaled application.

Litter-Robot offers quite a few accessories, including replacement parts and refresher kits (for more filters and drawer liners). Because of all the options I’m just going to highlight a few of the most useful add-ons. Go to Litter-Robot’s website for a list of all the accessories and their respective prices.
Also, you have the option to buy some of these awesome accessories in bundles instead of individually to save some cash.
Storage Cabinet – Great option for anyone wanting to keep their litter box completely out of sight. The lovely coffee oak finish will blend right in with your furniture.
Hutch – This is an optional add-on to the storage cabinet accessory. Great for style and function.
Credenza – Modern farmhouse-style piece of furniture that provides an alternative to the storage cabinet for hiding your fancy new auto litter box.
Litter Trap Mat – Traps any extra litter in mesh material to prevent any tracking.
Fence + Ramp – These are sold separately but both are apart of the ‘Clean’ bundle. The combination works wonders keeping the litter getting everywhere.
Here are some of the things you can control:
- Power – You can turn it on and off remotely from the app.
- Wait Time – Depending on whether your cat likes to linger or not, you can choose a wait time accordingly. Options are 3, 7 and 15 minutes. Litter-Robot reckons 7 minutes is the sweet spot.
- Night Light – This is a great feature for elderly cats whose senses may be dulling a bit. You can set it up to automatically switch on during evening hours.
- Sleep Mode – If you want some quiet time during the night, you can turn on sleep mode. This prevents the unit from cycling for 8 hours.

How It Works
So far in this review we’ve talked about the features and various accessory options, but how does the Litter-Robot work? If your wallet is going to take such a beating, you have to understand what you’re getting.
In simplest terms, it’s a globe on top of a box. Your cat climbs into the chamber (activating the cat sensor), does her business and gracefully exits. The robot then waits 3, 7 or 15 minutes to begin sifting; you choose whichever you think is best. Once your kitty is a safe distance away the globe begins to rotate. A plastic netting catches the waste and allows the litter to pass through. During a certain point in the rotation, a small hole appears and the waste is deposited in the bin below.
Once the waste is gone it beings to rotate back to its original position, leaving a fresh bed of litter for your kitty. The whole process takes about one or two minutes. Then, after a few uses, you’ll get a notification from the Connect app that the waste bin is full and needs emptying. Dump the bag, replace the plastic liner in the bin and slide it back into the mechanical litter box. Could it get any easier?
Here’s a quick video by Litter-Robot summing it all up:
Downsides & Drawbacks
We’d like to say this elaborate self-cleaning litter box is perfect; but sadly, few things are.
The first drawback is obvious: The price tag. It may be tough to justify the cost of this thing. You’re paying an extra couple hundred bucks more than you would be for a more budget-friendly model. However, that age-old adage “you get what you pay for” is certainly applicable here.
Most electric litter boxes- click here for a breakdown of the best– have some big problems a lot of people can’t get around. Sometimes it’s user error but a lot of the times it’s not.
For example, the PetSafe ScoopFree Self Cleaning Litter Box is a very popular model and has four stars on Amazon. But for it to function properly you need to use PetSafe’s proprietary litter trays, which get very expensive very quick. Customers have also complained about the rake malfunctioning and the entire box failing to work after just a few months of use.
I’ve found that most mechanical litter boxes work okay for a while. Really the trick is using them as instructed and cleaning and maintaining the various components.
Conversely, the Litter-Robot almost never needs to be cleaned because it’s so efficient. However, when it does come time to clean, it’s super easy. The modular design makes it really easy to take apart and put back together. On top of that, none of the other auto litter boxes come with an app that helps you troubleshoot anything going wrong.
Another potential deal-breaker for the LR is the sheer size of the thing. If you don’t have a ton of real estate in your place then you may want to consider a smaller model. Give the above dimensions a second look and consider where you can put it. Ideally, you’re looking for a room that isn’t used that often and has a power outlet.
Keep in mind that the LR is NOT suited for kittens or cats under 5 lbs. Anything lighter than that won’t activate the sensor.
All in all, the Litter-Robot 3 Connect is pretty impressive. I greatly doubt you’ll find a superior robotic cat toilet out there- trust me, I’ve looked.
The budget-breaking price tag is definitely an obstacle to get around. However, there are reconditioned Litter-Robot 3 Connects on their website that allow you to save about 100 bucks. These are just refurbished appliances sent back within the 90-day window.
But seriously, I haven’t seen a single person who decided to make the leap to the LR and regretted it. Once you get a taste of the notification life you’ll never go back.
Personally, I love simplicity and efficiency. I try to streamline everything I do and use to be as productive as possible. That goes double for litter duty. The less time I spend around cat poop, the better! No more scrambling to scoop when expecting company and constantly asking yourself “does it smell in here?”
For some peace of mind, the LR comes with a 90-day money-back guarantee and a 18 month warranty (you can extend the warranty if you want). If you decide it’s not for you, return it no questions asked.
